Rite of passage

Big day for Anna. With friend Ida in tow, she traversed the fear of the ear piercing gun and arrived adorned on the other side.

  1. Anna, you may or may not know that I never had my ears pierced, and now I'm going to tell you the story behind that. I was in my mid-20's, living and working in Washington, DC. Mark and I worked in the same building; we were just friends then. We had both just returned from our Peace Corps years in Africa, where every female has her ears pierced, at quite a young age. I'm not a dressy type of person, and to tell you the truth, I was always squeamish about the pain I might feel in that particular sensitive spot. But finally I got up the courage and made an appt to go get pierced right after work, one spring day. But before I could do that, Mark came down to my office and asked me what i was doing after work. I said, "I'm going to get my ears pierced." He replied, "Why would you do that? I've got tickets to a Baltimore Orioles game; come with me."
And the rest is history. Still don't have my ears pierced. Now that's mostly so I can continue to tell this story, but I'm still a little chicken about it, too.

  2. It gets more complicated...
Anna was going to get her ears pierced for Christmas. She got a couple lovely pairs of earrings, and was excited to take the plunge. Here, you go to the farmacia (pharmacy) to pierce your ears. But the reality was a little too scary. Twice we got to the farmcia and aborted the mission after the piercing gun came into view. So, four months and much agony later, it was quite a victory to beat the fear. But, it hasn't completely gone well. One of the piercings was slightly higher than the other, and we weren't sure what to do. While Anna was in school on Monday, I went to talk to the woman in the farmacia, who said she couldn't repierce the ear until it had completely healed. At the same time, while at school, the other, well placed earring fell out. Sigh. Poor dear is back to square one, with no earrings in, waiting for both to heal over and redo. But she seems perfectly fine with it.
